The Current Building at 550 East Tennessee Street
Built by the Works Progress Administration (WPA) for $500,000, citizens thought
the school was too expensive, too far out of town and much too big with its three stories.
The locals were sure that there would never be enough students to fill the structure. In 1937,
the WPA project was complete and Leon High School opened its doors to the citizens
of Tallahassee and Leon County. Leon is still an architecturally beautiful and functional
school and in 1993, earned a spot on the National Register of Historic Places.
